Do you know yours?
It was a hot summer afternoon.
I was at 5th grade.
Several girls from school were at my house.
We were brainstorming on what play to engage ourselves.
Anything with water was most desired.
Anything with water was also a guarantee to face furious parents later.
“I know!!” I announced excitingly with authority.
I had the most brilliant idea that involved water without the parents scolding part.
I had my friends clean my house.
We got to splash as much water as we wanted.
I even proposed to move the furniture around so that we played house at the same time, not with Barbies but with the human version, us.
Three hours later.
Much laugh, much fun, a clean house and everyone was asking to host the play again next week.
I was so very proud of myself, fostering friendship and getting chores done at the same time.
When my mom was home from work, I shared this successful afternoon, barely containing my pride and happiness.
“How could you ask your friend to clean our house??!!!” Conclusion deduced from my joy by Mom.
My mother was mortified and warned me not to do it again.
Well, of course I did it again.
Other than the fun, perhaps I wanted to prove to her I was right.
I got a more serious warning this time.
This is my last memory about my childhood play.
This memory came back to me very recent in a way that I could feel my own childish laugh and the cold water on my skin very recently.
I had forgotten this self who naturally commending play and work altogether and so readily and easily enrolling others on board.
